On Avengers Age of Ultron

Watched the Avengers with lots of anticipation and to be honest, it disappointed. Yes the production quality was good and it was an ambitious project that somewhat delivered but it was a huge let down to comic book fans in several ways. Furthermore their meaningless inclusion of certain beloved characters and brutal treatment of the same just reflects how petty Marvel's squabbles with Fox are. Overall, I give this show a B4 grading. *SPOILERS* below.

If you haven't watched the show, you can stop reading here because.... *SPOILERS*

What went right:

1)     Hulkbuster Armour Ironman vs the Hulk: Seeing Iron Man have a go against the Hulk in his signature Hulkbuster Armour is probably the best part of the movie. I would pay good money to watch a well produced movie that is entirely about a rich man in a suit vs an invincible god-like monster who is also a superhero with cameos from other superheroes. On second thoughts, I think I have just described the plot of Batman v Superman. Dear Zack Snyder, if you are reading this, please don't screw up.

2)     Greater emphasis on Hawkeye and the Hulk: After the fridging of Hawkeye in the first movie, it was a relief to see some action from him this time round and a greater emphasis on his back story. Hawkeye having a family and kids was a pleasant twist. Although not canon, it was believable and added to the overall feel of the movie.

What went wrong:

1)     Ultron tells lame jokes: Ultron, the titular villain is supposed to be an extremely menacing, stone cold AI who is nearly invincible and in the comics, destroyed the Avengers all on his own after acquiring the Vibranium required to build an invincible body. Instead what we get is a psychologically tortured soul who tells lame jokes, forgets his lines and who despite being made out of vibranium seems to be relatively easily destroyed. In the trailers, we see Captain America's shield ripped in half. And that had a huge psychological effect because we knew how indestructible Vibranium is and if Ultron were built with Vibranium, he should be even stronger. However, it turned out that the above-mentioned scene was just a "vision" (pun unintended). In contrast, Ultron even in his Vibranium suit was easily ripped apart by the Vision and 2 other guys who had visions. This villain decay is reminiscent of Shane Black's treatment of the Mandarin in Iron Man 3, who turned out to be another phony.

2)     Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch: The inclusion of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch was completely unnecessary. There are many Avengers/pseudo- Avengers who could be included and yet they chose to use 2 characters whose rights they sort of didn't have. The complicated legal loopholes they had to jump through to use characters whose rights belonged to Fox resulted in them trying extremely hard to describe the wonder twins in a way which didn't include the words mutant, quicksilver or scarlet witch. It was almost as painful as watching the Amazing Spiderman not say, "with great power comes great responsibility". Finally, they killed off Quicksilver in the most ridiculous way. For a speedster to be killed by a bullet is like letting a cheetah be killed by a snail. It was done obviously in a way to give a huge middle finger to Fox for not returning the rights of X-men back to Marvel.

3)     Forced romance between the Black Widow and the Hulk: You could blame it on the lack of screen time/back story/whatever but the on-screen romance between Black Widow and the Hulk was extremely forced especially after seeing greater chemistry between her and Captain America and Hawkeye. When they finally kissed, it sent chills down my spine in a manner similar to how Christian Grey kissed Anastasia Steele in 50 Shades of Grey, cold and senseless.

4)     The whole thing about the Vision: This iteration of the Vision was weird, felt weird and is weird. Vision is an extremely cool character (albeit a ripoff of the Martian Manhunter and the Red Tornado). His character and powers are somewhat legendary. However, instead of eliciting a "wow" reaction from the audience, all I heard after leaving the cinema was, "who is the weird guy with the red painted face".

Overall, it is a decently produced blockbuster movie which is extremely ambitious. It is still a delight to see childhood comic book heroes brought to screen however, Ultron, the titular villain is not believable as an AI much less a villain. Finally, the movie sacrificed viewing pleasure to spite Fox by including a beloved X-men character, mutilating his back story on screen and finally killing him off in a senseless way.

On the Singapore Savings Bond and What it is about in Layman's Terms

The Singapore Government has recently announced the launching of its savings bond (SSB) program in the second half of 2015.

The savings bond will possess the following characteristics:

A) Principal-guaranteed

This means that the issuer of the bond (i.e. the Government of Singapore), guarantees that the value of the bond, will not fall below the value of the principal. E.g. If you bought the bond for $500, you will receive at minimum $500 at maturity, provided that the Government of Singapore does not go bankrupt or into default. (The chance of this is very low).

B) Redeemable at any time with no penalty

This means that you can redeem the bond at any time without any penalty fees. This is unlike Fixed/Time Deposits where they cannot be redeemed before maturity or may incur penalty costs for redemption before maturity. Furthermore, not only will there be no penalty, any accrued interest will be paid to the investor of the bond upon redemption.

Furthermore, unlike an FD, the investor need not decide upfront how long he wants to invest in the bond.

C) Stepped up interest rates linked to the return on Singapore Government Securities (SGS)

Another characteristic of the Singapore Savings Bond, is that the average interest investors will receive over the period will match that of a SGS bond of equivalent tenure.
This means that if you hold your Savings Bond for the full 10-year term, the average interest per year on your investment will match the return if you had invested in a 10-year SGS bond. Similarly, if you hold the bond for only 1 year, you should receive the average interest on a 1-year SGS bond.

Shown below are the benchmark yields of the SGS 10-Year Bonds from Mar 2014 - Mar 2015.

As you can see, the average yields range from 1.88-2.49%. If you were to hold the bonds till full maturity (10 years), you should receive rates equal/similar to a current issue of the 10-year SGS bond. As interest rates are expected to rise due to appreciation of the USD against the SGD as well as the upcoming raising of the Fed Funds Target Rate (US Central Bank Benchmark Rate) later in the year, we could see the returns on the Singapore Savings Bond increase.

D) Non-Tradable and only individuals will be allowed to buy them

Unlike stocks/bonds listed on SGX or catalist, The Singapore Savings Bonds will not be tradable. This means that you cannot buy or sell the bonds on the secondary market. You will only be able to purchase them from the Singapore government and to sell them to the Singapore government. It can only be bought by individuals and thus are not available to institutions. The bonds will be sold in denominations of S$500, and there will be a cap (not set yet) to how much an individual can buy. Furthermore as the bonds are issued by the Singapore governement, they will bear the country's credit quality, which currently stands at AAA for S&P and Fitch and Aaa for Moody's. This is the highest credit rating score possible.

The FAQ that you really wanted to ask but were too embarrassed to ask:

Q: How much can I earn from the bond?
A: The interest received will depend on how long you hold the bond for. If you hold the bond till maturity, you will receive the 10 year SGS Bond Rate 2-3%. If you hold the bond for 2 years, you should receive a rate similar to the 2 year SGS Bond Rate.

Q: Can use CPF to buy or not?
A: No, it is cash only. Furthermore it would be unwise to use your CPF to buy SSBs, since you are currently earning between 2.5-4% in your CPF account.

Q: If I buy already and then I vote for opposition in the upcoming election and then the PAP lose the election, will I lose my money?
A: No, there is a distinction between the ruling party and the government. You should not "lose" your money, in the event that the PAP loses the general election. However, this is not an encouragement for you to vote for the opposition. You should vote wisely. (This also does not mean that you should vote for a party that names itself as "wisely").

Q: Why is the government doing this? Is there something wrong with our CPF or our economy that they need to borrow money from citizens?
A: The Government of Singapore does not issue bonds for the purpose of fiscal borrowing or to cover budget deficit. The SGS bonds are issued to develop a bond market and to provide the market a market derived benchmark rate for long term fixed incomes securities. For the SSB bond issue, it is likely a response to HKMA's issuance of inflation protected bonds and to provide retail investors an alternative investment option.

Q: Is this like CPF 2.0 where halfway through the gahmen can raise the minimum sum or change to an annuity or whatever?
A: No this is a bond not a pension scheme. If the characteristics of the bond are changed in anyway, or the coupons are not paid or the principal not allowed to be redeemed, it will be deemed as a default and may affect our AAA/Aaa sovereign rating.

Q: How do I buy this bond? Will the government give me a piece of paper like an IOU which I have to keep under my mattress or in a safe?
A: It is highly unlikely that you will receive a physical paper which is susceptible to theft or fire. You will need to open a CDP account to hold the bond. Information on how/what medium you can purchase the bond from is not available yet but you can likely purchase it through similar channels for primary auction of SGS as well as through ATM (probably).

Q: Should I put my money in OCBC 360 or this?
A: If you fulfill at least 2 out of 3 criteria required for bonus interests, you will receive 2.05% in the OCBC 360 account. At 2.05% should be better off than the SSB unless you hold it till maturity or there are big swings in interest rates.

However do note that the bonus interest only applies for deposits up to SGD 50,000.

Update: OCBC recently announced changes to the OCBC 360 account. You can read more about the changes as well as access an analysis tool to see what are the impact of those changes on you here

Q: Wah, this bond looks very good leh. I'm going to take out all of my money from my bank account and under my mattress to invest in this.
A: There will be a cap on the amount of SSBs that an individual can purchase. The cap will be revealed on a later date. So it is unlikely that an individual can invest all of his life savings into the SSB. Furthermore, it would not be prudent to invest all of your savings into a single instrument. Depending on your risk profile, you might like to diversify your savings into other investment vehicles.

Q: The return of 2-3% is so chui, if I buy Hyflux or Capital Mall bonds, I can get 6%/3.8% respectively.
A: The SSB is effectively risk free (very very small chance of default), whereas Corporate bonds have a higher chance of default. Also the SSB is principal protected, whereas, unless you hold the corporate bond till maturity, you may end up redeeming the value, you bought it for.

Conclusion:

The SSB will provide an alternative investment for retail investors which is principal protected, provides liquidity and to some extent, inflation protected. Depending on the coupon rates, it could provide a strong alternative to the bank's FDs. In the coming months, we could see banks coming up with innovative products or more attractive rates to retain or attract liqudiity for their longer term funding needs.

On which Superhero TV Series to watch for Fall Season 2014.

This coming fall season is a season of superheroes on network TV with a gamut of offerings such as Arrow, The Flash, Gotham, Constantine, Agents of Shield and Agent Carter. Now I know that we are all busy people with not enough time to watch all the shows on TV so I have prepared this blog entry to give you a quick review of these shows and to provide an opinion on what is worth watching based on various qualitative and quantiative criteria with qualitative being personal opinion and quantitative measures by rotten tomato ratings.

Starting with:

Arrow
Tomatometer: 100%
Audience Rating: 95%
Season Premiere Date: Oct 8, 2014

Starting this fall in it's 3rd season, Arrow is without a doubt the best superhero movie this decade. Based on DC Comics hero Green Arrow. Season 2 saw an epic showdown between Green Arrow and Deathstroke the Terminator in an epic finale that rivals any others on TV. Season 3 promises greater action sequences with much hinted appearance of Ra's al Ghul, that will keep looking forward to Wednesdays every week. Also promised is a crossover with potential hit series, The Flash which will see two 1 hour episodes screened depicting a crossover between the emerald archer and the scarlet speedster.

Pros:
Great action sequences
Compelling storyline
Strong emotional attachment to characters
2 hour crossover episode with the flash!

Cons:
Presence of some cheesy one liners

My verdict: If you can only watch one of the 6 shows, this show is the definite number 1.

The Flash
Tomatometer: N/A (Not yet aired)
Audience Rating: 96%
Premiere Date: Oct 7, 2014
From the same creators as Arrow, the Flash brings to screen the Scarlet Speedster and forensic scientist, Barry Allen who acquires super speed through a freak accident and becomes known as the Fastest Man Alive. The birth of the Flash was featured in a crossover episode in season 2 of Arrow and it is promised that this will be a faithful adpation of the DC Comics character. With the much anticipated crossover event, this show has is likely to take off running at a pace that will put you on the edge of your seat.
Pros:
Crossover event
Faithful adaptation to the comic book character
Great choreography and compelling storyline
Cons:
Some cheesy acting expected

My verdict: A definite must watch along with Arrow. This show is a number 2 on my list.

Gotham
Tomatometer: N/A (Not yet aired)
Audience Rating: 100%
Premiere Date: Sep 22, 2014
Airing on Fox, Gotham is an origin story of the great DC Comics Super-Villains and vigilantes, revealing an entirely new chapter that has never been told. Gotham follows one cop's rise through a dangerously corrupt city teetering on the edge of evil, and chronicles the birth of one of the most popular super heroes of our time.
Pros:
Great Casting
Unexplored period within the Dark Knight's timeline with focus on James Gordon rather than the Dark Knight
Cons:
Bruce Wayne's still a kid so no this will be a Gotham without Batman

My verdict: Potentially worth watching. Number 3 on my list.

Constantine
Tomatometer: N/A (Not yet aired)
Audience Rating: 89%
Premiere Date: Oct 24, 2014
Airing on NBC, Constantine is based on the wildly popular comic book series "Hellblazer" from DC Comics, seasoned demon hunter and master of the occult John Constantine specializes in giving hell... hell. Armed with a ferocious knowledge of the dark arts and his wickedly naughty wit, he fights the good fight - or at least he did. With his soul already damned to hell, he's decided to leave his do-gooder life behind. But when demons target Liv, the daughter of one of Constantine's oldest friends, he's reluctantly thrust back into the fray - and he'll do whatever it takes to save her.
Pros:
Trailer looks good
Series aims to bring back the charm of Buffy the Vampire Slayer of the 90s
Intelligent Storyline
Cons:
Might not live up to the hype of Keanu Reeve's Constantine (2005)

My verdict: Potentially worth watching. Number 4 on my list.

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D
Tomatometer: 86%
Audience Rating: 71%
Season Premiere Date: Sep 23, 2014
The show premiered on Sep 24, 2013 with much hype but later proved to be a disappointment as the choreography, storyline and acting were very much sub par. It starts off in the aftermath of the battle between invading aliens and the Earth's mightiest heroes, the Avengers, but doesn't manage to tap into the vast MCU to propel its storyline forward. The show also relies on verbal story telling to add an enigmatic feel when a flashback could have done a better job. Furthermore, the fight choreography is limited considering the size of the budget for the production. AoS tries to redeem itself by connectiing with the events on Captain America, the Winter Soldier but it is a case of too little too late.
Pros:
Connected to Marvel's Movie Universe
Cons:
Zero connection to characters on the show
Only good actor on the show is Clark Gregg
Fails to tap into the vast MCU
Relies on verbal story telling instead of flashbacks

My Verdict: Wish I could take back the hours I spent watching Season 1. Number 5 on my list

Marvel's Agent Carter
Tomatometer: N/A (Not Aired Yet)
Audience Rating: 50%
Season Premiere Date: Unconfirmed

Airing in 2015 is Marvel's Agent Carter, which will see Agent Peggy Carter appearing in the second season of Marvel's Agents of Shield this fall. However, there is little news out there on whether we will be seeing younger Peggy Carter from when S.H.I.E.L.D. was formed, or a slightly older Carter in a flashback with Coulson, or the dementia suffering Carter from ‘The Winter Soldier.’ It’s easy to assume that they could be using flashbacks to make parallels between Peggy putting together S.H.I.E.L.D. originally with Coulson trying to rebuild it in modern times. Offhand, also in the episode will be TV Host George Stephanopoulos who will be playing himself.

Pros:
Likely to be connected with Marvel Cinematic Universe
Cons:
Likely to be sub par version of Marvel's Agent of Shield with a focus on an even less interesting character.

My Verdict: Not worth your time. Number 6 on my list
